7 Great Things to Do For English Wine Week

Good news everybody! it’s English Wine Week. For those of you who haven’t heard of this rather excellent nationwide event, it’s a week-long programme of activities running from Saturday May 26th to Sunday 3rd June which are all intended to celebrate the best that our very own English wineries have to offer. There’s a whole host of events up and down the country, so we at Winerist have done the hard work for you and compiled our list of seven great things to do over the course of this wonderful week. All you need to do is get there, find a glass of something delicious and have a jolly good time!

Winery Tour and Tasting at Hush Heath – Staplehurst, Kent

26th May – 3rd June

The fabulous Hush Heath, tucked away in the beautiful Kent countryside, is the producer of the award-winning Balfour Brut Rosé amongst some other truly outstanding wines. Set in the 400-acre grounds of the beautiful Hush Heath Manor (which dates impressively back to 1503, no less!) the estate’s vineyards cover 40 acres of rolling land with the three classic sparkling wine grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

Throughout the week, Hush Heath are inviting you to join them on a special guided tour of their gorgeous vineyards, where you will learn all about the magical art of grape growing. You’ll be treated to a sneak peek at their state-of-the-art winemaking facilities, and a guided tasting of no less than six of their delicious wines and ciders. The tour concludes at their very own Goudhurst Inn, where you’ll be treated to a glass of their best English fizz and a sharing platter for two. All of this indulgence comes at the bargain price of £35 per couple.

A Quintessentially English Wine Week with Crockers – Tring, Hertfordshire

26th May – 3rd June

Crocker’s Chef’s Table was founded by Luke Garnsworthy in 2016 as he followed his passion for food and dream of providing a totally unique customer experience. Supported by a sterling team including head chef Scott Barnard (runner-up in Masterchef: The Professionals 2015. Ooooh!), Crocker’s aims to deliver a sumptuous fine dining menu in relaxed surroundings.

The restaurant also aims to celebrate the best of British produce, including, of course, wine – and this week the venue has partnered with English wine producer Gusbourne to offer their exceptional Sparkling Rosé, Brut Reserve and Chardonnay wines for as little as £8.00 per glass throughout the week. A mixture of wholly British, world-class wine and food – what could be better?

Wine Week at Flemings Hotel – Mayfair, London

For a seriously sumptuous Wine Week experience, head to the luxury boutique hotel Flemings in the heart of London’s Mayfair. This chic hotel boasts some serious culinary excellence in the form of Michelin-starred head chef Shaun Rankin and Director of Wine Andreas Rosendal (we want his job!). This dream team have worked together to create a gorgeous limited-edition menu featuring the best of seasonal produce. Their delectable dishes are paired with some of the best wines in the UK, sourced from across the Ridgeview, Gusbourne, Albourne and Denbies wine estates.

Amazing, right? But if you’re a discerning wine connoisseur looking for something really special, then never fear … Andreas himself is also hosting a series of tastings in the hotel’s underground wine cellar, The Barrel Room. The room itself is one of the building’s original cellars and dates back to 1851 (this just gets better, doesn’t it!). Here, you can enjoy a canapé or two whilst Andreas works through five of his very favourite English wines with you.

Hanwell Wine Estate Open Saturday – Melton Mowbray, Nottinghamshire

The Hanwell Estate at Melton Mowbray is throwing open its glorious gates with free entry for all visitors on Saturday 2nd June. This estate, owned by Scott and Helenka Brown, lies amidst the undulating hills of South Nottinghamshire and prides itself on an outstanding selection of white and rosé sparkling wines, all produced under the watchful eye of Helenka’s father and award-winning winemaker Tony Skuriat (notable for the outstanding wines produced at his own Eglantine Vineyard in Notts).

Head across to this idyllic spot for a self-guided wine tour of the beautiful 35-acre spot, as well as a free wine tasting (music to our ears!) and a chance to pick the brains of the estate’s resident wine expert, Helenka Brown. For the designated drivers, there’s also a smashing selection of teas, coffee and homemade cake on offer.

Wine and Cheese Walk – Denbies Vineyard, Dorking, Surrey

Denbies is one of the biggest wine producers in the UK, with a remarkable set of credentials helping them to compete with the serious players of the wine world – and not only do they compete, but they win! Since the first vines were planted in 1984, they’ve gone on to win a whole host of international awards including the first ever Gold for an English rosé and an International Gold for their Noble Harvest Dessert wine. Not a bad effort, I’m sure you’ll agree.

In honour of English Wine Week, Denbies are offering guests a guided walking tour through their impressive 627 acres of land (don’t worry, you don’t have to ramble round the entire estate!) concluding at the heart of the vineyard with a tasting of four wines, accompanied by a mouth-watering selection of local cheeses for just £19.95 per person.
