Is red wine good for your heart?
Just in case you needed another reason to drink red wine, there have been countless studies over the last decade suggesting that just one glass per day could help to prevent blood clots, lower cholesterol and dramatically improve the health of your heart. Sadly, there are many who doubt these claims, and it has even been suggested that you would have to drink as many as 60 glasses per day in order to feel these beneficial effects - a tall order for even the most dedicated of wine lovers!
Of course, that hasn’t stopped us enjoying a glass or two (better to be safe than sorry when it comes to health, we always think), and now new research has found that regularly drinking red wine may have a powerful anti-ageing effect. In fact, some experts say* that a small glass of red wine a day is better for your than drinking nothing at all! It’s just a shame that the benefits stop if you have much more than that.
The science of red wine
Red wine is naturally rich in antioxidants, and these antioxidants help to destroy the harmful ‘free radicals’ inside your body that contribute to ageing and age-related diseases. The star of the show here is ‘Resveratrol’, an antioxidant belonging to a group called polyphenols. Resveratrol stimulates Sirtuin, (an enzyme know to promote DNA repair and cell regeneration), and, happily, this miracle ingredient is present in the seeds, stems and skins of grapes used in winemaking.
Resveratrol is used in many anti-ageing skincare products, such as Caudulie’s ‘Lift’ face cream or Charlotte Tilbury’s ‘Youth Glow’ primer, where it has been proven to improve skin elasticity, firmness and radiance. But why rub it onto your skin when you could enjoy it in a glass? Sipping on a Chianti or opening a fantastic Rioja could be the best thing you’ve ever done for your skincare regime!
Raise a toast!
We’re all for growing old gracefully, and, like a mature champagne (like the new Mumm 6 cuvée we featured last week), we reckon that pretty much everything gets better with age. We also happen to believe that there’s not many things that can’t be improved with a glass of red wine. So, there you have it - choose your favourite red and raise a toast to the wonderful properties of wine!
