Does Wine Make You Horny?

It’s not one of the side-effects usually attributed to wine consumption, but rumour has it that wine, in particular red wine, can increase your libido and, well… make you horny! There's so much talk around the subject that the Bodegas Monje winery in Tenerife has even trademarked the wine and sex concept.

THE SURVEY

Things have been getting steamy in wineries around the world with director Iris Brosch creating a raunchy video in the vineyards and French winemakers posing with the vines for a nude calendar.

With the popularity of 50 Shades of Grey and its upcoming release in cinemas, we thought it was the perfect time to debunk the myth and find out whether wine does actually make you horny! The women then answered 19 questions and could achieve a score between 2-36. The higher your score, supposedly the more often you would want to have sex. The red wine drinkers scored an average of 27.3 points which was 2 points more than the second group and 4 points more than those who didn’t drink at all.

Conclusion: Because of their higher score, it was said that red wine drinkers were more horny than their teetotal counterparts. OK, we admit that survey doesn’t sounds like real proof to support the wine drinking/sex drive correlation, but it has led to more research…

THE SCIENCE

Drinking Wine

Wine Folly says that “Alcohol in small amounts will increase your libido. It will also make you hungry and feel flushed. This is because ethanol stimulates a primitive part of your brain called the hypothalamus which is located right above your brain stem. This portion of our brain regulates basic human functions including body temperature, hunger, hormone levels, parental attachment behavior and, of course, your sex drive.”

The only caveat is that this applies if you’re drinking in moderation. If you’ve had a whole bottle of wine chances are you won’t feel much of anything, but after 1 or 2 glasses, then the above applies.

Conclusion: Alcohol can boost your sex drive, but only if you drink responsibly!

Smelling Wine

It’s not just the drinking of wine that will turn you on, but smelling it also has repercussions on your libido. Studies have been taken up in an attempt to discover whether certain smells turn people on, and which smells are the most arousing. Men and women find different smells appealing...

Which Aromas Arouse Women?
Women are typically turned on by musky, earthy, woody, licorice-y, and cherry-like aromas. Wine Folly suggests the following wines which are often described in a similar way: Nebbiolo, Barbera, Sangiovese, Zinfandel and even rustic Pinot Noir

Which Aromas Arouse Men?
Men are typically turned on with lavender, caramel, butter, orange, licorice, baking spice, vanilla-like aromas. For these scents, Wine Folly suggests Champagne, Moscato, Dry Sherry, Tawny Port, Vin Santo, Grenache, Syrah and even Rosé wines.

Conclusion: Again, the research and science is still quite young on this topic. Next time you open one of the above wines, why not give it a sniff and test it out for yourself!
