My afternoon snack when I was child was bread, with wine and sugar. I spent a lot of time with my mother observing how she cooked. I think that this marked the rest of my life. I'm passionate about wine & food! I was born in Barcelona but I moved to Girona 13 years ago. I needed a change in my professional life, top executives with a tie no longer motivated me. I decided to convert my passion in my job and now I'm dedicated to give to our visitors the opportunity to know Girona and the Costa Brava in a different way.
INTERVIEW WITH XAVIER:
When did you discover your passion for wine?
I think that my passion for wine was born when I was child. Well, this needs an explanation! In Catalonia, when I was child it was common to have an afternoon snack after school in the form of bread, wine and sugar. The recipe is easy, a slice of bread with a dash of wine and sugar. I still have the taste saved in my memory. The wine was introduced in my diet in a natural way. Many years after, I found a wine shop in my neighborhood, which was managed by an Italian and his Catalonian wife. They helped me to learn about wines and good wines at a good price. From that moment, I bought one different wine every week.
What is your favourite wine/grape variety and why?
I love Grenache, because it is a Mediterranean variety widely used in l'Empordà and provides body to the wine without acidity.
What is a traditional Catalonian wine and food pairing dish?
Seafood with Cava (Catalan sparkling wine) is one of my favourite combinations.
What would be your top 3 tips for the keen wine traveller?
- Avoid touristic wineries and look for the essence in small wineries.
- Get to know the winemaker and talk with him/her. You will find his personality in the wines!
- Don't forget that the wineries are in a region where people live! Get to know other people outside the world of wine and other landscapes. The characteristics of the region have influence in its wine.
Finally, which wine region in the world would you like to visit next?
Maybe Australia. I hope something totally different!
