Perched on the highest top on Methamis, a cute little village in the Vaucluse region of Provence, Metafort stands like tower (hence the ‘fort’ in the name). Metafort is a unique Maison d’Hotes (B&B in French) combining luxury, minimalism, design in a 17th century old stone house.
Metafort is the new creation of husband & wife team Isa & Phillippe, having opened its doors in June 2012. Having previously run a successful B&B in Provence, Isa & Phillippe needed a new project. So after 9 months of hard work, Metafort was reborn into the zen like retreat it is today.
Isa met us with a huge smile on her face on our visit and quickly offered us a chocolate cake she baked herself and coffee. We immediately feel at home! Isa then shows us the outside, where a stunning infinity pool secluded by an old stone wall overlooks the canyon of the Nesque Valley. If you peek over the wall, you can just see a large fall in the valley and natural caves. Though it was a bit cold on the day for a swim, there is something very relaxing and eerie by just glancing at the water.
We stepped inside and I immediately notice many paintings, wall-pieces and art prints. Isa modestly confesses that she paints in her free time with many of her paintings available for sale. Her biggest project to date was Metafort – each single piece of furniture and details was personally sourced by Isa. She even designed the wall lamps ad the main chandelier using ingenious materials. I wish I was this creative!
Metafort has only 5 spacious rooms each with its own unique contemporary décor and personal touches. We stayed in the Opaline room, which had plenty of light and fantastic views over the village and the nearby vineyards. The king-sized bed was the most comfortable I have slept on in a long time. And the bath was an ultra high-tech Jacuzzi dotted with multi-coloured lights and its own MP3 player. Just close your eyes and bubble away at the push of a button. If you are looking for more relaxation you can also enjoy a massage in their own spa.
The most special and romantic room of the house (which Isa told me gets booked up very quickly) is Sous les Etoiles room. It’s at the top of the house and offers a very unique experience – sleep outside under the Provencal stars. The bed can be easily pushed onto the room’s terrace so you can enjoy the outdoors. This is the room we will book next time!
Breakfast at Metafort was a gastronomic delight. Isa greets you with warm coffee, freshly baked cakes, breads, French toast and home made jams. We thoroughly enjoyed her carrot and walnut cake – she publishes her recipes on the blog (in French). I must give it a try.
Gastronomic experiences at Metafort go beyond breakfast. Isa is a splendid cook and always tries to put her own spin on things. Every Saturday evening (or on request) Isa & Phillippe organize cooking classes combined with wine & food pairings with local wines. A must try.
Since it is so new it is still an undiscovered gem, but the secret is getting out so get ready to book your stay under the stars at Metafort today!
