Tour Overview
Learn about the historical importance of the Douro region, not only for the process of winemaking but also for the Portuguese identity, on this full-day tour.
The tour starts at 08h20 AM from the Living Tours office at Porto city centre and you will be driven in comfort towards the Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the green and the gold blend perfectly with the river course.
As you will learn, the Douro region has enormous importance for the wine culture, particularly for Port wines. For more than 2000 years, Port wine has been produced in the Douro Valley by traditional landholders.
The first stop is in Amarante. This city became very important after Saint Gonçalo's arrival (1187- 1259), one of the most renowned saints in Christian history. He settled here after his pilgrimage through Rome and Jerusalem, making this city an important religious stop in Portugal. Take the opportunity to learn more from this charming village in a short walking guided tour through the historic centre where you may visit the convent and church. You may as well take some time to observe its beautiful bridge over the Tamega River and taste the renowned conventual pastry.
Continue to one of the most surprising spots of this tour: the Galafura viewpoint. Also known as São Leonardo da Galafura viewpoint, this place will take your breath away. From the top, you will have a privileged view over the Douro River and the surrounding landscape. This is one of the greatest highlights of this tour!
After all the contemplation, it's time for a traditional 3 course lunch pairing with local Douro wines. You will have the opportunity to taste the best of the Douro's typical gastronomy in a family owned restaurant, where the food follows homemade and familiar recipes.
The tour continues to Pinhão, one of the most beautiful and charming villages of this region. Stop for a 1-hour panoramic relaxing cruise along the Douro River. Observe the imposing natural views and the gorgeous vineyards.
End your day with a visit to a renowned wine estate, where you will not miss the chance to taste 3 excellent wines and learn all about the Port wine production and culture.
Return comfortably to Porto, observing the beautiful landscapes between the Douro and the city of Porto.
