Tour Overview
This 2-day wine tasting tour offers a teasing introduction to two of Catalonia’s most famous wine producing regions: DO Penedès and DOQ Priorat. Accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide you will enjoy private winery visits, gourmet meals and, for a complete immersion, stay overnight in a winery.
Itinerary:
Day 1: D.O. Penedès
Depart from the bright city lights of Barcelona into the Catalonia countryside, heading to El Penedès, one of the oldest wine-producing regions in Europe.
First stop is a small vineyard that is typical of the region which is known for its small-batch, specialist wine producers. After a brief tour, enjoy a tasting of 3 of the winery’s wines.
Continue a short distance to a second winery where you will be taken on a tour of the vineyard and the cellar. Learn about the grapes grown in this region and an explanation of the wine producing process and bottling methods used. The tour culminates in the tasting room for a generous sampling of whites, reds and a reserve cava. This will be enjoyed over a delicious meal of traditional Catalan food comprising of cured meats and cheeses, olives, tomato salad, bread with tomato and olive oil, and homemade Spanish tortilla.
After lunch, head deeper into the Catalan wine country to the DOQ Priorat, one of Spain’s top wine producing regions, and home to some of the finest Spanish wineries. A brief stop will be made en-route to visit a 12th-century Romanesque monastery.
Your destination, and overnight stay, is the winery of Clos Figueras. This iconic winery is run by the very charming Christopher Cannan, who along with Alvaro Palacios & Rene Barbier, is one of the pioneering wine producers of Priorat. Clos Figueras wines are produced with grapes from old vines, without watering, using insecticides or any other synthetic products.
Upon arrival there will be time to settle into your comfortable room before enjoying a private wine tasting and delicious dinner of local produce.
Day 2: DOQ Priorat
The day starts at a leisurely pace with a full breakfast of fresh croissants and other bread, local cheese, cured meat, yogurt, juice and coffee.
After breakfast, stretch your legs with a downhill walk through the beautiful vineyards of the Priorat. Make a stop for an olive oil tasting. Then it’s time for a country lunch of local fare accompanied with wine in the former monastic community of Scaladei, whose monastery and winemaking tradition date back to the 12th century.
After lunch, visit one of the higher elevation boutique wineries in the Priorat for a tasting of a spectrum of red wines that showcase the versatility of the cultivation and winemaking tradition in the Priorat.
Continue on to the tiny village of Porrera where you will meet Paco Castillo-Serrano of the family-run Clos Dominic winery. He will host you on a tour of their beautiful vineyards and a tasting of their fabulous vintages. This old-vine vineyard (with some vines over 100 years old) was purchased by Paco and his wife, Dominique, in 1998 when they began to fulfill their dream of creating their own wines. To this day, they manage and harvest their vineyards with help only from family and friends.
After your tasting at Clos Dominic, head back to Barcelona where you will be dropped off at your accommodation.
