Description

Discover the Santamaria winery, situated right next to the historical centre of Capmany.

The origins of this family company date back to around 1877, when Gregori Artizà obtained the medal for perfection in the National Wine Exhibition.

Two wine ageing cellars can be visited on the estate, one dating from 16th century, built in the Romanesque/Gothic style, and the other dating from the turn of the 20th century. There is also a museum in which the family’s old utensils are on display, along with all sorts of documents, such as an 1879 decree in which the civil governor of Girona appoints Gregori Artizà to monitor and detect phylloxera in the province. The winery, which has been producing the Gran Recosind wine since 1980, was one of the first to implement oak barrel ageing for DO Empordà wines.

The philosophy of Cellers Santamaria is based on the desire to produce only crianza (aged) and Reserva wines, types in which they were pioneers in Empordà with their 1974 vintage. Today, the winery doesn't market any bottle less than four years old. Thanks to the quality of their vines, some of which are more than a century old, they don't purchase grapes or wine for their products. In fact, at the beginning of the present decade they were still pulling up the last stocks planted by their great-grandfather Artizà after the phylloxera plague, at the end of the 19th century.

The current vines produce the red varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha, Cariñena, Tempranillo, Merlot and Syrah and the whites Macabeo and Chardonnay. Faithful to their philosophy, they only produce red wines, either complex combinations or single varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon). Depending on the vintage, these are crianzas, Reservas or Grandes Reservas, always under the brand Gran Recosind.

A visit to the Cellers Santamaria facility includes the small family museum with mementos of all kinds, among which stand out those related to winemaking.
