Description

Discover the wines of Macedonia at the small family-run winery, Villa and Winery Mal Sveti Kliment.

Villa and Winery Mal Sveti Kliment is a small family-run winery devoted to Macedonian wine culture and the production of fine wines made with great care, passion, and superb grapes.

All the vineyards of this boutique winery are located close to Ohrid Lake and the mountains in the Ohrid region and are small, traditional farmlands, managed by the family and local agriculturists from the nearby villages. Being a huge body of water located at a high altitude of 700 meters above sea level, the Ohrid lake region has a unique microclimate completely different to that of the rest of the Balkan regions, and as a result, grape varieties grown here give off completely different aromas to the same grape varieties grown in other regions nearby as they have a higher acidity and are fresher. This is especially the case for the Ohridsko Crno and Pamid varieties, which are native to these regions, but even so for the full-bodied Vranec.

A huge amount of dedication is put into the production of each and every grape to the extent that each individual grape is handpicked when it is perfectly ripe to ensure the high quality of all the wines produced. As a result of this dedication, the winery only produces a couple of thousand bottles each year.

Not only is great pride taken in the making of the wineries award-winning wines, but the wine bar is built in a traditional stone style where the Amphora wine is still produced using an ancient method.

There are five wines produced here:

Rakaciteli: a light bodied dry white wine with abundant flavours of lemons, ripe citrus and ad dominant but pleasant acidity.
Amphora: a unique rose wine using the ancient grape variety of Pamid which has characteristic aromas of cornelians cherry and wild strawberries, as well as light body and flavours of cornelians cherry and berries.
Ohridsko Crno:  a unique red wine made from the native variety Ohridsko Crno with a medium body and full flavour, dominated by red currants and cornelian cherry.
Vranec: a dry red wine, with hints of cherries and plums, pleasant tannins and an acidity that completes it.
Vranex Barrique: A full-bodied red wine aged for 6 months in barrique oak barrels, made from Macedonian oak with a dark ruby colour and distinct aromas of sour cherry, prunes, and caramel.

These wines are available to be tried out at exclusive wine tastings and traditional food pairings.
