Winery Overview
Castello di Potentino is an ancient castle built on an Etruscan site just 30km from Montalcino. It lies in a secret valley in one of the last undiscovered corners of Tuscany – Monte Amiata. The medieval building is surrounded by unspoilt countryside, dotted with the vines and the ancient olive trees used for the estate’s small production of high quality wine, grappa and oil.
Charlotte Horton has been making award-winning wines in Tuscany for over 20 years. At Castello di Potentino she has revitalised an abandoned estate, planting new vineyards and bringing back olive trees into production.
The vineyard at the Castello di Potentino is situated on the slopes of the highest peak in Tuscany, Monte Amiata, an extinct volcano. The valley is low and sheltered. This means that in the summer the days are hot but nights are cold as the air comes down from the mountain. The earth is volcanic, geologically very new and mineral rich. This minerality creates a notably sapid and fine wine, with subtle bouquets and a rich but not heavy body.
Find out what makes the wine so unique with an exclusive wine tasting. Tour the historic Castello and Cantina, learn about the winemaking process from vine to bottle and finish off with a taste of what makes Potentino so special.
Castello di Potentino’s tastings are conducted by the winemaker, Charlotte Horton, her brother or by someone who has actually has hands on experience with the winemaking process - unlike many other wine estates.
The visit lasts about 90 minutes. Tasting of 6 wines and the grappa included.
It is also possible to stay at Castello di Potentino in one of 8 unique and luxurious bedrooms in the main castle. Contact us for more information.
