Description

Discover La Raia, a biodynamic Demeter certified farm set in Novi Ligure in the heart of the gentle Gavi hills. Here you'll learn about biodynamic farming and winemaking techniques.

La Raia comprises approximately 180 hectares including 42 of vineyards, 60 of fields where old cereals like rye and small speltare farmed, pastures where Piedmont cows are breeded, and a beautiful lake. The remaining includes woodland of chestnuts, elderflowers and acacias.

This exclusive ecosystem produced biodynamic honey, three types of Gavi D.O.C.G. and two types of Piemonte Barbera D.O.C.

The winery is frequently visited by professionals and enthusiasts who want to know more about how the rammed earth technique was used in an architectural context which surprises for its ability of putting together old and modern materials – such as steel, layered wood and glass – and old building techniques.

La Raia’s vineyards are cultivated organically with the biodynamic method, which dispenses with pesticides and herbicides. This method also adds a new kind of vitality to the soil, which in the past had suffered the use of heavy tools and tractors. Today as much work on the...

La Raia’s vineyards are cultivated organically with the biodynamic method, which dispenses with pesticides and herbicides. This method also adds a new kind of vitality to the soil, which in the past had suffered the use of heavy tools and tractors. Today as much work on the vineyards as possible is done manually and when necessary light tractors are used, always following the vine’s schedule. From this approach is born a genuine wine of quality.
La Raia produces wines of great personality, surprisingly able to evolve. Thanks to the biodynamic organic approach the Gavi terroir’s originality and vitality was discovered, a century-long history of nature. And the wines are a pure expression of it.
During spring and summer, you can enjoy a walk among grassed rows and to discover the green manure technique, which allows the vines’ roots to get the richest nourishment from the deep soil.
Then you will visit the winery, with its unique architecture, which perfectly melts contemporary materials, like glass, steel and layered wood, with ancient building techniques, such as rammed earth. Its distinctive feature is, in fact, thegreat pisé wall created by the Austrian artist and architect Martin Rauch, the greatest international expert of this technique.
Guests will be given an explanation of the winemaking methods, particularly interesting because the entire winery process (Demeter certified), follows the biodynamic principles: low temperatures, the slightest usage of sulphur, local yeasts.
Outside the winery a new experience awaits the visitor. Fondazione La Raia is devoted to promoting art and culture inspired by this extraordinary territory. La Raia hosts site specific works of Remo Salvadori and Koo Jeong A.
The tour ends with a tasting of the wine collection, which takes place inside the winery during winter and near the estate’s lake in spring and summer.
Wines are paired with local organic products and courses cooked by the best “taste artisans” of the area, using the raw materials produced at La Raia, such as the small spelt cultivated according to biodynamic principles.
La Raia now offers luxury accommodation, in three beautiful apartments combining antique furniture with design artistic pieces.
Visiting guests can enjoy a truffle hunting and wine tasting package, including 2 nights accommodation for 2 people with breakfast, a tour and tasting with lunch at the winery, truffle hunting, truffle dinner paired with Barolo wine and a tour and tasting at a chocolate factory.
