Set against a dramatic backdrop of the inimitable macchia Mediterranea, forests, ancient olive groves, and surrounding the impeccable gardens and grounds of 12th century Castello di Vicarello, you will find the vineyards.
Six hectares of high-density, organically grown vineyards produce the castle's wines. The Vicarello story can begin to be told through the land and its climate, yet its deepest narrative can be ascribed to the dedication and passion of Carlo Baccheschi-Berti.
The wines at Castello di Vicarello are now made by two generations of the Baccheschi-Berti family, Carlo and eldest son Brando. Finding his inspiration in the wines of Bordeaux, Carlo sought to realise his dream of creating a wine in Tuscany akin to those of the celebrated terroir. His strong intuition to plant specific cultivars and implement high-density planting has resulted in wines that pay homage to both. The wines may find their inspiration from Bordeaux, yet always with a strong reference to Tuscany and more specifically, Maremma.
The exquisite nature of the soil, optimal location, and choice of cultivars only begin to tell the story of our vineyards. Benefitting from these virtues and combined with commitment and passion is how Vicarello produces its certified organic wines.
Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot were each chosen for their inherent character to ennoble the classic wines of Tuscany. Sangiovese, a staple of Tuscan winemaking is blended with Merlot to create an alternative interpretation of the Maremma.
The 6 hectares range from 9,000 to 14,000 plants per hectare and are divided between classic cordon training to ancient “alberello” or head spur training. Natural sulfur and copper are the only treatments used in the organic vineyards.
The castle also offers accommodation, in nine suites, sensitively restored and elegantly decorated, featuring original stone and brick walls, a tasteful mélange of antique and modern furniture, and an oriental touch stemming from the Baccheschi Berti family’s years spent in Indonesia.
