Château Cos d'Estournel

Divine and captivating wines

Description

Discover Cos d’Estournel, ideally situated at the heart of an undulating landscape in the northern Médoc.

Beneath its majestic pagodas and behind its heavy sculpted wooden door, the château houses cellars of unsurpassed modernity and purity, a sharp contrast to its ornate façade. The facilities were designed in collaboration with the team to optimize the processes of winemaking and aging. Architectural form is truly at the service of technique and the château itself remains dedicated to the sole pursuit of winemaking, according to the vision of Louis Gaspard d’Estournel.

The estate’s rolling contours served as inspiration for its name; ”cos” is derived from the word for “hill of pebbles” in the old Gascon dialect.

A near miracle in geographic and geologic terms, Cos d’Estournel benefits from an unparalleled combination of soils and exposures. This wealth of natural variations fully expresses itself in the estate’s wines, which are among the world’s most highly reputed.

Intimately persuaded of the potential of his vines, Louis Gaspard d’Estournel sought constantly to expand, and would gradually acquire the prime plots on the hill of Cos. Today the vineyard occupies 100 hectares. Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for two-thirds of this precious mosaic of numerous plots, with a lesser proportion of the land dedicated to Merlot and a small proportion to Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Nestled among the vines of Cos d’Estournel is the private residence of Michel Reybier and his family, the Chartreuse. With six bedrooms and two suites, it offers all the warmth and discreet elegance of a family retreat. Staying at the Chartreuse means an exclusive opportunity to experience life on the estate from the inside. To ensure utmost enjoyment for our guests, the Chartreuse is only available to rent in its entirety.

Wine lovers can enjoy an unforgettable experience at Cos d’Estournel and discover the fascinating history of its founder Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel, nicknamed the “Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe”, the incomparable exposure of its vineyard and the variety of its terroirs, its modern gravity-flow cellar, housed under the oriental architecture of the pagodas, and finally the unique style of the wines of Cos d’Estournel, born of a noble terroir and glorified with respect by the passion of men over the centuries.
