Tour Overview
Discover the Kakheti wine region with this 2-day wine tour itinerary, perfect for those wishing to spend a wonderful themed weekend while in Georgia.
Both days of the program are focused on Eastern Georgia’s region Kakheti, with a special emphasis on the Georgian traditional winemaking process, starting from the very essence of the national method, the Qvevri-makers (qvevri is a special clay pot where, being kept underground, pressed grapes are stored, mature and turn into wine), and continued by visits to different vineyards and wine cellars.
The tour also includes such historical and architectural highlights of the region as Alaverdi monastery, Gremi complex (former Kakheti royal residence), and Sighnaghi town.
Day 1: You will be picked-up from your accommodation in Tbilisi, and accompanied by the guide you will travel to Kakheti region following the picturesque Gombori mountain pass.
Stop in the Vardisubani Village, at the very heart of the Alazani valley. Home to one of the most famous qvevri-makers family in the country, here you will see how the national wine vessel is made from scratch.
Next stop will be the Alaverdi monastery, the 6th century Orthodox monastery that is still in service, also known for its monastery wine.
Visit Wine Chateau Baba, a vineyard, winery, and wine cellar located in arguably the most beautiful place in the region, at the footsteps of Greater Caucasus mountain range. This family-run winery produces four types of traditional Georgian wine on 11 hectares of private vineyards: Saperavi, Kisi, Mtsvane and Rkatsiteli. Enjoy a detailed wine tour, followed by a delicious lunch and wine tasting.
Continue to the Gremi architectural complex, the 16th century Royal citadel of Kakhetian kings.
You will be spending the night at Shaloshvili’s Marani and Hotel - private wine cellar. Enjoy a wine tour and delicious dinner.
Day 2: After breakfast drive to magnificent Nekresi, remains of the 4th century AD town and monastery located high on the hill inside the deep mountain forest. When up at the Nekresi you will see an amazing view over the birthplace of Georgian wine, the Alazani valley.
Visit the Khareba winery, one of the biggest wine producing companies in Georgia, and its unique wine cellar, which is located inside a tunnel excavated deep into the mountain gorge (total length of the wine tunnel lanes is 7.7 km long). Enjoy a wine tour and wine tasting before visiting the village of Velistsikhe for a private wine cellar and a delicious lunch.
Drive to the town of Sighnaghi, also known as a “city of love” (mostly for the fact that one can register a marriage there 24/7). This small Kakhetian town is surrounded by ancient city walls with 23 watchtowers. Visit one of the most famous wine cellar called “Pheasant’s tears” for a wine tasting before returning to Tbilisi.
